Hello,

This week is our Veteran’s Day Program! It will be this Thursday from 6-7. We hope you are able to make it. You will also see a list of trick words in your child’s agenda. We just wanted to make you aware of the trick words that the students are learning and practicing during our word study time. While it isn’t required homework, it is helpful for them to get repeated practice!

Reading:
In reading this week we will continue our work with nonfiction reading. This week we practicing reading topic-specific vocabulary and understanding the lingo of the topics we are reading. We will practice using text features and context clues to decode and understand new vocabulary. Finally, we will review decoding strategies that will help us tackle those tricky words! 

Writing:
This week in writing we are going to begin setting goals to improve our informational writing. We will begin exploring editing and revising process as non-fiction writers. Second graders will also begin experimenting with tailoring their writing to their audience and working to craft their writing so their readers can picture the information they are teaching! 

Math:
In math this week we will be practicing and learning new strategies for solving 2 digit and 3 digit adding problems. We will also talk about what happens when they make a new group of 10 or 100. We will end the week looking at money and learning about how much it is worth and how to organize and count money.

Researcher’s Workshop:
In researcher’s workshop we will continue learning about why plants need roots by observing our radish seeds growing, and we will learn the importance of sunlight to plants. 

Word Work:
In word work we will continue reviewing and practicing baseword and suffix combinations (ex. ing, ed, er, est, s, es). We will also be looking at vowel teams oa, oe, and ow while continuing to practice all of our trick words.
