Reading:
This week in reading we are going to focus on paying close attention to authors. How authors have intentions, and readers don’t just notice those craft move they can try them. We will also learn about connecting the whole book together and thinking about what the author is trying to teach us. When students are reading this week a few questions you could ask are:

  • Did the author teach you a lesson with that story or chapter?
  • What craft moves did you see the author use?
  • What did the author do that made you want to keep reading?
  • Can you tell me what happened in this book? Just the important parts!

Writing:
In writing this week we are continuing to work on telling small moments stories. We are working on finding ways to ‘zoom in’ on our topic and add tiny details. We are learning how to craft powerful endings, just like the master authors we are studying. We will work on setting goals for our writing time and experimenting with different techniques to revise and improve our writing!

Math:
This week in math we are continuing to work on relating subtraction and addition, solving for unknown addends, and solving for unknown totals. We will be exploring these concepts while working in word problems. We will practice solving different types of word problems with unknown addends and unknown totals, in addition to reviewing comparison word problems.

Researcher’s Workshop:
This week we will continue our Animal Biodiversity unit. We will explore animal sounds and foods that they eat and how that helps categorize them. Also how animals are different inside of each category!  We will also do some engineering to build a bird feeder to attract certain kinds of birds.
